Bus passengers in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough set to still travel for just £2!
January 2, 2025
Cambridgeshire’s biggest bus operator has confirmed that it will take part in a new £2 fare cap scheme, which will mean that adults will continue to pay no more than £2 for a single trip – and under-25’s can pay just £1!
Stagecoach East has opted in to the Mayor’s £2 fare cap, even when the national cap is raised to £3 in the new year, This local fare cap scheme covers places such as Cambridge, Peterborough and St Ives and is funded separately by the Cambridge and Peterborough Combined Authority. This runs alongside the £1 Tiger Bus Pass, available to under-25’s in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, which mean a single trip costs just £1 for anyone with a pass.
The £2 fare cap applies across all of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
The news comes as Cambridge City Council’s current consultation on car parking charges proposes to increase the price of a stay of over five hours at the weekend at Grand Arcade or Park Street by £3.00 to £33.10.
By contrast, a return trip, including all day parking of up to 18 hours, on the Park & Ride bus services will be £4, less than the cost to park for just two hours at either Grand Arcade, Park Street or Grafton East or West.
Darren Roe, Managing Director of Stagecoach East, said: “We are delighted for our customers, across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, that we will be able to be part of the Mayor’s new £2 fare cap scheme, which will run from 1st January 2025.
“Our local Elected Officials are clearly as passionate as we are about making sure that buses remain at the heart of our local communities, bringing people together in an easy, enjoyable and great value way. At Stagecoach, we say that we are ‘stronger together’ and it is exactly this kind of partnership working that has seen bus usage increase across our region in recent times.
“We are proud to do our part in this, with investments to increase reliability: over the past year, because our buses are in good working order and we have Drivers available, we rarely need to cancel services. As a result, we complete approximately 99.5% of the miles we are timetabled to complete each week, to make sure that our loyal customers can get where they need to go.”
Dr Nik Johnson, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, added: “The fare cap has proven itself to be a great way of encouraging more passengers onto the buses and I’m proud that we’ve been able to enhance the support from government. By keeping fares low and introducing innovative initiatives like the Tiger Pass for under-25s, we are supporting our communities and enabling greener, more accessible transport choices.”
