Cambridge North rail station car park to become community drive-in carol service

December 16, 2020

Cambridge North rail station’s car park is to be transformed into a festive drive-in carol service this Sunday.

Greater Anglia has agreed that its 374-space car park can be used by Hope Church who wanted to find a way to bring the community together at Christmas in a Covid-secure way.

The large car park will provide room for up to 160 cars parked in alternate bays, plus a stage, so that people can come armed with hot flasks, mince pies and festive fancy dress to enjoy an hour of carol singing from the comfort of their vehicles.

Music will be relayed via an FM transmitter to people’s car radios so that they can sing along.

The free event takes place at 3.00pm on Sunday 20 December. There are a few spaces left and these must be booked in advance via Eventbrite.co.uk/e/132405015967

Greater Anglia’s Area Customer Service Manager, Anita Stuart, said, “We are doing everything we can to make rail travel safe, with social distancing measures in place and lots of extra cleaning. However, there are still far fewer people travelling at this time so there is plenty of space in the car park.

“Therefore, when Hope Church approached us to ask if they could borrow it for their event we thought it was a really lovely idea and a great way to bring some joy and positivity in these challenging times.”

Reverend Andy Atkins of Hope Church said, “I am so grateful to Greater Anglia for working with us on this community project with a difference.

“There have been number of community drive in carol services popping up around the country this Christmas and they have been really well received.

“It’s a fantastic way to bring people together and enjoy a bit of Christmas in a Covid-secure way.”

Hope Church is a welcoming community at the heart of Chesterton, Cambridge.
