Domino Takes Major Steps Towards Sustainability Goals

July 19, 2024

A Cambridge company is enhancing its commitment to sustainability with a major installation of solar panels at its Bar Hill headquarters.

Domino has invested in a total of more than 650 new solar panels on its main building at Trafalgar Way, adding to the 250 already installed on other adjacent units.

During the recent refurbishment of the site the company was awarded an SKA Bronze Certificate, the highest accreditation possible for the scope of the project.

Over the same period, it also received a Silver EcoVadis rating in recognition of its improved CSR performance.

Significant achievements over the last two years have included: all energy now procured from guaranteed renewable sources with a voltage optimisation system reducing overall consumption by approximately 8% annually; LED lighting installed throughout the Bar Hill sites, with motion sensors on all lights in HQ to save energy; and 38 vehicle recharging points now available for employees, together with the launch of a Green Car Scheme.

During 2024 Domino is aiming for zero waste to landfill and reducing reliance on gas significantly, with plans to eliminate gas boilers entirely from the headquarters building over next two years.

Steve Impey, Estates and SHE Manager at Domino said: “Post pandemic, our comprehensive refurbishment of Trafalgar Way to align with the move to hybrid working gave us an ideal opportunity to review our sustainability goals for the building. The recent installation of solar panels is a major milestone but we recognise that this is an ongoing journey which requires commitment and collaboration as we go forward.”

Also high on Domino’s sustainability agenda is reducing its carbon footprint covering carbon emissions from all areas in the business. For that reason, long-term goals have been set in line with identified carbon reductions actions. The team is further engaging in product carbon footprint and life cycle assessments to identify emissions at each stage.”

Jessica Buettner, Group Environmental Impact Manager, said: “We have successfully started on our environmental journey towards a greener future and are getting better at understanding and setting priorities. There is still a lot to do and challenges ahead of us all, not just limited to Domino. Here we are fortunate in having many great people with complementary skillsets who are very passionate about collaborating on better environmental solutions.”
