Helping improve breast cancer outcomes in Zimbabwe

November 21, 2023

SustainableTech4Good’s Laptops4Learning was delighted to be able to support the Bulawayo /Matabeleland South Breast Cancer Project in Zimbabwe with a donation of 3 laptops and 3 tablets. These were to help them to set up new breast clinics in one of the most deprived parts of Zimbabwe. Women developing breast cancer in Zimbabwe currently face some of the worst outcomes in Africa, with many being diagnosed at a late stage, when their cancer can no longer be cured.

The donations from Laptops4Learning enable the online transmission, remote reporting and storage of breast ultrasound images, which reduces the often long delays patients experience before any treatment can be started.

Two of the three new clinics are now fully up and running (Bulawayo and Gwanda), and the third clinic in Beitbridge will start running before Christmas when the lead nurse returns from her fellowship in the UK. The clinics are already getting a lot of attendees and are booked up 3 or 4 weeks in advance.

We are also supporting by donating a mobile phone for each clinic, to be used as an alternative means of providing an ultrasound image, linking with a Clarius probe. These will complete the technical equipment needed for the clinics to function fully.
Digital devices have many important uses, and we cannot think of a better way for sustainable, refurbished tech to be deployed. We very much hope that this project will mean earlier diagnosis and improved outcomes for women in this deprived part of Zimbabwe.

“…wonderful news that Laptops4Learning will be donating 3 laptops and 3 tablets to the Bulawayo/Matabeleland South Breast Cancer Project…. Please express our sincere thanks to all …who have made this special gift possible.”
