New Apprenticeship places on offer at Domino Printing

February 6, 2023

A Cambridge company is recognising this year’s National Apprenticeship Week (6-12 February) by paying tribute to its own apprentices – and launching its 2023 Scheme.

Domino Printing is offering five places for apprentices at its Bar Hill headquarters: four in R&D and one in Digital Printing. Applications are open until 28 February to start in September.

Since the Scheme started in 2016, a total of 31 recruits across the business are now reaping the rewards of the Domino structured programme which enables you to ‘earn as you learn’ by offering real-life experience in the workplace combined with developing academic and vocational skills.

Alex Hanzi, an Engineering and Manufacturing Technician, was recently named the most outstanding apprentice by his peers. He joined the company in 2018 from sixth form college and after completing a six month rotation in the Machine Shop, decided that this was the area he wanted to focus on.

Alex says: “My current role as a Junior Technician gives me responsibility for running and programming jobs that come in via our interactive KanBan board, including those requiring our CNC milling machines and lathe. I am working towards my HNC in Mechanical Engineering and would like to take it on to degree level.

“I enjoy the variety of my work as every day has different challenges to solve, involving the use of a wide range of machines and tools.

“The Apprenticeship Scheme at Domino has been a really positive and beneficial experience for me. I would strongly recommend this route to anyone coming out of school or higher education as a first step on their career ladder.”

After joining from school in 2017 as an Engineering Technician, Akaash Matharoo is now working towards a degree in Product Design Development. Currently part of the System Team, he is focusing on the hydraulic technology in Domino printers, as well as contributing to new development projects.

He says: “I am now studying for a degree in Mechanical Engineering set to finish in 2024. My current role is great as it involves the use of multiple disciplines that I enjoy, such as CAD prototyping design work, integration testing of components and creation of custom tools.

“Apprentices at Domino are treated as real assets. I’ve found my colleagues to be highly supportive in helping me develop skills and willing to invest extra effort in detailed explanations to broaden my knowledge base.”

Mark Gearing, Print System Director, Group R&D added: “The Scheme benefits not only the apprentices in terms of ‘earning whilst learning’ and practical experience but also Domino as a business. It enables us to develop employees who embrace our values and culture, as well as help address succession planning and filling vacant roles.”

The Domino Apprenticeship Scheme for 2023 is open for applications until 28 February. Further details on https://www.domino-printing.com/en-gb/careers/vacancy-details.aspx?vacancyNum=VN137
