College student crowned Table Tennis Champion

Cambridge Regional College student, Jay Law has been crowned Regional Table Tennis Champion in the Table Tennis England Schools’ Individual Competition.

At the age of 9, Jay started playing table tennis and subsequently joined his school team in Hong Kong. Upon moving to the UK in 2021, Jay joined clubs in Cambridge, London and Manchester and continued with his hobby alongside his learning as a Culinary Arts student with Cambridge Regional College.

Towards the end of 2021, Jay entered the Schools’ Individual Table Tennis Competition in the U19 category as the youngest competitor in the category, aged just 16. Jay was recently announced as Cambridgeshire Champion in the Regional heats.

Jay said: “I am happy and excited to have the opportunity to learn more about table tennis as a sport and gain further experience at a competitive level. At this stage table tennis is a hobby as I have always wanted to be a chef. I plan to pursue a career as a professional chef and create dishes for people to enjoy, but who knows what will happen in the future.”

The competition pathway for schools in England is organised by Table Tennis England as part of its wider competition structure. Under the title English Schools Table Tennis, there are two National Schools Competitions – one for teams and the other for individual players.

51 schools’ counties, signed up to Table Tennis England, hold qualifying events in their region across England. The winners then represent their county in the Butterfly National Schools Competitions, which are due to take place in April 2022 in Wolverhampton.
