Walk for Hospice Care – Star Shine Night Walk is back in Cambridge

April 19, 2024

A celebratory sunset walk on Saturday 22 June for adult hospice care.

Star Shine Night Walk is returning for 2024, bringing together hundreds of people from the local community. Every year hundreds of local people take to Cambridge’s streets to walk in memory of their loved ones and raise funds for people supported by Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, with many walkers returning annually.

On Saturday 22 June, as the sun sets over Cambridge on one of the longest days, walkers will set off from Shelford Rugby Club. Participants can choose from a 5 or 10 mile option, meaning there’s a suitable challenge for all. Both routes will be brand new. The 10-mile route will take in some of Cambridge’s iconic landmarks while the 5-mile route will be local to the Shelford area.

You’ll be helping local people with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition to receive the care they need as you walk and make precious new memories alongside the family, friends and colleagues you walk with.

Together, as we walk, we turn the streets of Cambridge green for people who need support in your local community.

Martina Marsh, who walked in 2023 shared her story “Our beautiful Kathy currently lies drifting in & out of consciousness at the wonderful Arthur Rank Hospice as we count down the hours.

She always knew when the big C hit at Christmas that this is where, she wanted to take her last breath and we as friends & family are eternally grateful for the comfort, care and refuge this wonderful sanctuary provides.

Kathy was a larger than life, caring, vivacious person who ALWAYS had time to lend an ear, knock up a veritable feast for anyone popping by or adjust or make an outfit. Her family, especially her boys ALWAYS came first and as a friend she was like no other.

I speak in the past as Kathy left when cancer started invading.

The world always takes the good ones and can be so very cruel so I thought all of us could give something back to Arthur Rank Hospice Charity and annually walk in her memory whilst supporting each other and reminiscing along the way.”

Another participant, Nicole Joan Scott, took part last year and commented: “What an amazing event this was. I had so much fun. Very well organised. The volunteers and photographers were so supportive and kind as well. I’m so proud to of been part of this and will be doing more in the future.”

The Charity’s Matron of Clinical Services, Carly Wills, said:

“I love taking part in Star Shine Night Walk! It’s great fun and an uplifting way to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones. It also gives those of us who work for the Charity an opportunity to remember the patients we care for. It’s really inclusive with a wheelchair friendly route. We welcome adults and children over 10 years of age (with a paying adult) and dogs outside on a lead!”

“It’s always an amazing atmosphere – you can feel the energy and passion of everyone taking part, including our incredible volunteers who help on the night.”

Star Shine Night Walk starts at 7pm from Shelford Rugby Club. A Star Radio DJ will be getting the crowd warmed up with a selection of great music before they set off. Walkers are encouraged to dress up and accessorise to set the city aglow.

This year’s event is kindly sponsored by Hamberley Care Homes, Cambridge Grove. Last year more than 350 participants and 80 volunteers were involved helping raise over £40,000, from a combination of registration fees and much welcome participant sponsorship. Together you can help make 2024 even bigger, and make a difference for more local people in our care!
