Greater Anglia to install new bike rack at Ely

Greater Anglia is replacing a bike rack at Ely station with a brand-new cycle rack – and is asking customers to move their cycles before the work gets underway later this month, to enable the upgrade to be completed.

Amongst the cycle parking facilities already available at the station, which include 144 spaces for bicycles, one of the racks is becoming life-expired and, as spare parts are increasingly hard to acquire, it will be replaced on 23 January with a better, more modern rack.

The bike rack being changed, which has a total of 40 spaces and is marked by having red handles, needs to be clear of bikes to enable the work to take place. Information signs are already attached to the rack, providing brief details of the upgrade work taking place.

Krzysztof Drozd, Greater Anglia’s Station Cleaning and Waste Manager, said: “We are replacing the old bike rack with a new rack, with a higher specification, that will allow our customers to park their bikes more easily.

“To allow the new rack to be put in as quickly as possible, if your bike is in the rack with the red handles or the information signs, we’d ask that you move it, if you can.”

Any bikes that are still in place, when the work begins, will be moved by Greater Anglia and stored at the station for 14 days. Customers can get their bike by speaking to the station supervisor. Bikes that are not claimed within 14 days will be donated to the Re-Cycle charity, which takes used bicycles and ships them to rural communities in Africa.

Cycle racks at Bury St Edmunds, Kelvedon, Rochford and Thurston stations are also planned to be renewed in the coming months.
