In Conversation With… Clare Friel

Mike will be hosting an interview with the very impressive business owner, Clare Friel.

“Clare would succeed more if she didn’t talk so much.”

That was the standard line in every school report Clare ever received. If only her teachers could see her now.

For someone named in the Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction, you wouldn’t have expected Clare to have needed to prove so many doubters wrong. Whether it was because of her teachers or those who tarred her with the teenage mum brush, a fire had been ignited in an 18-year-old Clare with a hunger to succeed.

Her career started mixing the glitz and glamour of the TV industry with the hustle and bustle of the London commute, travelling daily to and from the capital while caring for her little girl. It turns out those once frowned upon communication skills were pretty useful after all.

Fast forward to 2025, Clare is now the owner of a rapidly growing marketing and business development agency in Ipswich. As a business development specialist, she’s helped construction businesses win more than £35million in contracts, while her marketing clients have found their names splashed on the front pages of newspapers across the country.

She’s become a familiar face in the local media industry, gracing the airwaves with her knowledge over the radio, or inviting the press to her highly successful Women in Construction networking events across the county. Those events have continued to grow in recent years, even inspiring college students to set up groups of their own.

Clare isn’t just passionate about supporting the next generation of construction workers – she’s a big believer in unlocking people’s potentials to prove the doubters wrong.

Keynote speaker – Peter Freeman CBE

After qualifying as a lawyer, Peter formed the Argent Group of property companies with his brother in 1981. Argent is particularly known for major mixed-use projects like Brindleyplace in Birmingham, and King’s Cross and Brent Cross Town in London.

Peter has also been a non-executive director on several other property companies and a trustee of a number of charities connected with education, combating intolerance, and public performance art.

He was shortlisted for the Wolfson Economic Prize on delivering garden cities in 2014 and was until October 2020 Chair of Mayfield Market Towns Ltd. Peter was the principal author of the 2020 Housing Sprint Report. Peter was awarded a CBE for services to Housing and Communities in the New Year 2020 Honours List and became Chair of Homes England in October 2020. In July 2023 he was appointed Chairman of the Government’s Cambridge Delivery Group, who the government has tasked with delivering its vision for the city, supercharging Cambridge as ‘Europe’s science capital’.

They envision a sustainable new quarter featuring well-designed neighbourhoods for living, working, and studying. It will include cutting-edge labs, climate-adapted commercial developments, and life science facilities surrounded by accessible country parkland and woodland.
