Cracking Career Conversations™ – how to get the best from your team

October 22, 2024

We know that career and development opportunities are high on the wish-list for people when they’re looking for a new role.

But with many companies admitting to finding these areas challenging – and experts believing they are often the most cited reasons for people leaving their role – Anne Corder Recruitment is exploring how employees can engage in Cracking Career Conversations™.

This is the topic of a new virtual learning session hosted by the Peterborough-based recruitment agency.

Katy Walton, Founder/Director of Make Real Progress, will be sharing the tips and tricks to help you and your people managers boost engagement and performance in this crucial area.

The workshop on 14 November will look at:

  • The key challenges that companies and managers face with career conversations.
  • Helping managers to develop their skills – and overcome any fears.
  • Ways to approach the most common career conversation challenges that managers dread; including “They want a promotion, and I don’t think they’re anywhere near ready” and “We’ve got a small business and there’s nowhere for them to go”.

Katy (pictured) said: “There are several purposes of a career conversation, which are mutually beneficial to staff and their employer.

“I know from speaking to many employers that whilst they recognise the importance of having these meaningful conversations to help staff members identify their goals and create a development strategy to meet them – finding the time and /or the right starting point – and then creating a plan to take it forward – can be a challenge in itself.

She added: “Having regular career conversations with staff will help enable a learning culture that empowers them to continuously grow and develop. There is a direct correlation between regular career conversations and a more engaged and productive workforce.”

They can also:

  • Identify career-related strengths and development needs.
  • Manage career and development planning expectations.
  • Build more open, trusting relationships.
  • Develop a greater understanding of staff members’ future development challenges.
  • Develop an employer’s own management skills.
  • Build a strong reputation as a supportive manager.

Nel Woolcott, Managing Director at Anne Corder Recruitment added: “We are thrilled to have Katy run a brand-new session on such a valuable topic. Career development conversations show your team that you’re invested in them beyond just their daily to-do lists. When you discuss employees’ career aspirations and offer advice to help them get there, they feel supported. These discussions can also shed light on what your employees need to feel fulfilled and engaged at work.”
