March 6, 2025

On Thursday, March 20th at 19.30, join Benjamin F. Jones, State Historian and Director of the South Dakota State Historical Society, for an exclusive online presentation that will take you deep into one of World War II’s most audacious and covert operations. Discover the remarkable story of The Jedburghs, an elite group of special forces whose bravery and resolve played a pivotal role in the liberation of France from Nazi occupation. With their training at Milton Hall, the enduring connection to Peterborough holds special significance in their legacy.
A retired US Air Force officer, Jones’s own journey into understanding WWII special forces began during his service with the 352d Special Operations Group at RAF Mildenhall in the UK. His curiosity grew into a deep passion, ultimately inspiring his book Eisenhower’s Guerrillas: The Allies, the Jedburghs, and the Liberation of France. In his presentation, Jones will unravel the gripping, often dangerous missions of these elite operatives who worked hand-in-hand with the French resistance to disrupt Nazi control and pave the way for D-Day. Dr Jones said:
“I’ll discuss my book, Eisenhower’s Guerrillas: The Allies, the Jedburghs and the Liberation of France,” Jones shares. “It vividly describes the special warfare and underground guerrilla efforts the Allies planned with the French resistance in WWII. This was a world of secrecy, danger, and incredible bravery. Not only is their derring do and bravery compelling but the politics and strategy is fascinating.”
Through powerful imagery and historical context, Jones will walk you through the international politics, the complexities of the underground movements, and the riveting narrative of combat operations that played a pivotal role in changing the course of the war. His presentation, enhanced with slides featuring maps and photos, promises to immerse you in the extraordinary efforts of the Jedburghs—an inspiring yet largely forgotten chapter of history.
This is more than just a lecture; it’s an emotional journey into the heart of resistance, courage, and the extraordinary sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom.
